Domestic contracts (Prenuptial, Post-nuptial, and Cohabitation Agreements)

Alternative dispute Resolution (mediation, arbitration, negotiation)-
At Beckis Law, we assist you in resolving your matters collaboratively through arbitration, mediation or negotiation.
This method works in the sense that you can come to an agreement amongst yourselves without having the court impose a decision on you.
When mediation is successful, the parties are able to formalize their agreement in a legally binding contract. If no agreement is reached, either party may pursue alternative means such as litigation and court representation.
However, you cannot obtain a divorce through mediation, and only the court can pronounce a divorce judgement and officially dissolve your marriage.
You can however decide corollary relief (parenting arrangements, child and spousal support) via alternative dispute methods and via a Separation Agreement.

Depending on the circumstances of your case, sometimes mediation is best, and at other times, litigation becomes necessary.

Emergency protection orders (epo)
At Beckis Law, we assist those in immediate
danger of intimate partner violence in obtaining an Emergency Protection Order. An EPO helps to prevent contact with the Applicant and their children for a specified period of time.
Whether you are facing accusations of domestic violence by your partner intended to influence the outcome of an ongoing family law matter, or have already been subjected to violence, we help you deal with such applications and provide the support you need.
In order to be eligible for an EPO, you must be able to establish that all 3 things are true, pursuant to the Protection against Family Violence Act –
i. A family member has committed family violence
ii. You have reason to believe that the family member causing harm (the
respondent) will continue or resume carrying out the family violence
iii. The situation is serious or urgent such that you need a Court Order right away
to protect you and your family. This usually means the family violence
happened recently.
You can obtain an EPO 24 hours a day, 7 days a week by going to the Court house or before a Justice of Peace. If the situation is not serious or urgent, a King’s Bench Protection Order or a Restraining Order may be better options for you. If unsure, contact us by booking a consultation.
Parenting coordination
Parenting Coordination is a way of resolving child-related conflict among parents. A Parenting Coordinator is usually a family lawyer or mental health professional, with specialized training in mediation, parenting coordination and child development.
At Beckis Law, our Principal lawyer is well-trained, with a Masters degree in dispute resolution and conflict management (LLM). We help to facilitate communication and cooperation between parents for the purposes of effectively co-parenting their children.
Parenting coordination is a great option where parents often run into conflict while co-parenting their children and require a quick and cost-effective means of resolving their disagreements.
A Parenting Coordinator can often impose a
binding decision upon the parties in the event of an impasse.
adoption, fertility, and surrogacy
Adoption can take many various forms, and is a way to welcome a new child into your family. There is “adoption in Alberta”, which could be done either privately or publicly, adult adoption and International adoption.
